Green tea also contains a catechin (a natural antioxidant) that may prevent cell damage. Inflammation is thought to be one of the main causes of several different chronic illnesses. Polyphenols and catechin may protect cells and molecules from damages and may reduce the formation of free radicals in the body. Free radicals may be linked to aging and many other diseases.

Research has shown caffeine may improve mood, memory, and reaction time. The amount of caffeine in green is less than the amount found in regular coffee, but there is enough caffeine to produce a similar effect.

Another brain enhancing compound in green tea is L-theanine, which is an amino acid. L-theanine has been researched for being a tranquil agent by increasing the activity of the inhibitory neurotransmitter GABA, which has anti-anxiety effects. Caffeine and L-theanine may work together in harmony to improve brain function.

Green tea is a common ingredient in many fat burning supplements. There has been a lot of research into green tea and how it may increase metabolic rates and fat burning abilities. The catechins in green tea may stimulate fat oxidation and increase energy expenditure.
