This week our in-depth look is at Coconut. Coconut is an integral part of the TurmeriX™ blend.
Coconut brings us numerous health benefits. From supporting our immune system health and digestion, as well as reducing the risk of heart disease, coconut works wonders on our body. On top of this, it has the ability to strengthen bones and ward off anemia. Many research studies have shown that coconut may have positive effects on your health. Coconut contains protein, several important minerals, and small amounts of B vitamins. Coconuts are especially high in manganese, which is essential for bone health . They are also rich in copper and iron, which help form red blood cells.
So… What is Coconut?
The botanical name for coconut is Cocos nucifera –it is a tree of great versatility.
But did you know coconut can be considered a fruit, a seed or a nut?
A nut can be defined as a one-seeded fruit. That is the reason why with that loose definition, a coconut can also be a nut. However, a coconut is not a true nut. A true nut, such as the acorn does not open at maturity to release its seeds. The seeds are released when the fruit wall decays or are digested by an animal. Interesting fact: Coconuts are classified as a fibrous one-seeded drupe. A drupe is a fruit with a hard-stony covering enclosing the seed.
Coconut provides food, drink, clothing, and shelter, as well as a source of income from its products. It is well known for its multiple functions, mainly for its nutritional and medicinal values. As you know, coconut is available in a variety of forms, and can be wonderfully integrated into many recipes or drinks.
Coconut to Stabilize Blood Sugar
Coconuts may promote blood sugar control. Indeed, they are low in carbs and high in fibre, and fat, so it may help stabilize the blood sugar. Researchers suspect the improved beta-cell function was also due to the high amounts of arginine found in coconut. The high fiber content of coconut meat can also help slow digestion and improve insulin resistance, which might help regulate blood sugar levels as well.
Coconut as an Antioxidant
Coconut contains powerful antioxidants: the meat contains phenolic compounds, which are antioxidants that may help protect cells from oxidative damage.
Virgin coconut oil is extracted from fresh coconut kernel. Virgin coconut oil is a food supplement enhanced with polyphenolic antioxidants and medium chain saturated fatty acids. Research has shown several health benefits including lipid lowering, antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities.
Coconut as an Antibacterial Compound
Other known fact: monolaurin is a component of both coconut fat and breast milk. Evidence suggests that the compound may have the following qualities: antiviral, antibacterial and anti-fungal. Indeed, the efficiency has been observed against these virus: measles, Herpes simplex-1-2, HIV, visna virus, influenza, pneumonovirus and more.
Furthermore, some research shows its antibacterial effects against a range of bacteria including antibiotic-resistant bacteria called Staphylococcus aureus (Staph) and other types of bacteria such as Escherichia coli (E. coli) and Bacillus subtilis. Monolaurin has also been shown in research to treat infection with C. albicans, while also controlling the pro-inflammatory response of the body to the fungus.
Coconut as an Energy Source
Unlike most other dietary fats that are high in long-chain fatty acids, coconut oil comprises medium-chain fatty acids (MCFA). MCFA are unique in that they are easily absorbed and metabolised by the liver, and can be converted to ketones. Ketone bodies are an important alternative energy source in the brain, and may be beneficial to people developing or already with memory impairment, such as Alzheimer's disease.
Coconut has a wide range of health benefits. Whether you prefer to eat it raw, dried, or as flour, coconut meat is delicious and easy to incorporate into many recipes. Every bit of the coconut is used. As a result, coconuts are called the “Tree of Life” and can produce a variety of products such as drink, fiber, food, fuel, utensils, musical instruments, and much more!
